Racism Today

Last week, 20/20, Abc's news program featured two young girls named Lynx and Lamb who make up the singing group Prussian Blue. People have been in an uproar because the girls sing songs about white supremecy. October 23rd's edition of the online news, The Drudge Report, had a photo of the two cute young girls wearing T-shirts with Adolph Hitler smiley faces. I was going to read more about the girls at work but I found out that their website is blocked by my company as well as other sites like the National Socialist's website, Stormfront and other white supremecy sites. What is funny though, Louis Farrakhan's website for the "Nation of Islam" is not blocked! I would say that Louis Farrakhan and his people are much more racist than these two thirteen year old girls. What is really a shame is that the girls really aren't old enough to know what they are doing when people like Farrakhan are just plain dangerous!

Racism is racism, no matter how you cut it. Unfortunately, it has come to a place in our country that if I am proud of my white heritage, I am labeled a racist and a hater. Well, I am proud of my white heritage and I am proud of the things white people have done for this world and this country. I think black people should be proud of their contributions to society and they should look to people as George Washington Carver and Clarence Thomas as their role models. I think Hispanics should also be proud of good things that some of their people have done.

I have never understood why anyone can hate someone else just because of their skin color or their nationality. I used to run a Christian chat room and I ran across a few Jewish people that absolutely hated Christians. Apparently, they don't know that Christians are the biggest supporters of Jews there are. I know the white supremecists supposedly hate Jews but I've never been able to find a real reason for the hatred. I know that Jews and Muslims have a hatred for each other that has lasted from the time of Abraham in the Old Testament. The Catholics and Protestants of Ireland hate each other; the Bosnians and Serbs hate each other and on and on and on. I really think it is probably a FEW that hate but look how much trouble a FEW can cause. In Iraq, the Sunnis hate the Shia and vice versa. At some point, people need to come to the point where the hating stops and people begin to respect others regardless of skin color, religious affiliation or nationality. Who will it begin with? Will it be you?

Jay,

Unfortunately, all racism is not created equal. It is easy to be smug when your on top. And it is more difficult to climb a mountain when your climb is longer and steeper.

Matthew 7:1 Judge not, lest ye be judged yourself.

Or if you prefer a more common sense rule:
"If you don't have anythign nice to say, don't say anything at all"

I hardly think equating Louis Farrakhan with two hitler-loving thirteen year olds, helps further your plan to reduce hate and increase respect.

So if someone disagrees with you, then they are unworthy of respect?

I guess I should clarify something here. I do not equate nor believe Lynx and Lamb are anywhere near Farakhan when it comes to racism. He is much worse than these two girls probably ever will be. I can say the same for Jessie Jackson and other black "leaders".

What mountain are you speaking of? Blacks have had more opportunities in this country than whites for the past four decades. I can live with that though because it does not affect me today. Some blacks want to blame all their problems on slavery when NONE of them have ever been a slave. That is just a major cop out! I do believe opportunities are finally just beginning to even out where whites are getting equal treatment now. I think that is a sign that racism, as a whole, is over with, as well it should be.

In answer to your question in your last sentence, my answer is "of course not".

African-Americans did not "instantly" win civil rights in the 60's. And Courts have been phasing-out Affirmative Action plans since the mid-90s.

I am a white-german-christian-male. And I will be the first to admit that, execpt in the most limited circumstances, the cards are stacked in my favor. Why? I went to better primary schools than my minority peers, I've had better medical care than my minority peers, and most importantly... the people in charge of hiring new lawyers are white 99% of the time.

Everyone of the minority students at the U of MN law school deserves to be there. And without Affirmative Action many of them would not have had the chance to obtain a legal education. Now they will be able to become positive role-models, inspiring the next generation of hard-working/no-complaining people.

Life sure isn't fair, but ALL HUMANS complain from time to time. Hard to blame them somtimes.

Wow, you should have heard Thomas Sowell on Fox News today. They called the program, "Thomas Sowell; In the Right Direction." He talked about the civil rights movement has hurt the black man and lots of other things that would damage your liberal thinking. Oh, he's a black man too. Go here to see Fox's story - http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,176433,00.html

I was unable to watch the Thomas Sowell interview, so I can't speak directly to Mr. Sowell's claims.

But, "[j]ust because someone claims to be an authority this does not give them license to change history." Funny how your theories change from topic to topic.

Christians' beefs and African American beefs are similar. They both feel suppressed and/or wronged by various forces. The only difference, "the system" has a built-in pro-Christian bias, and African-Americans face inherent negative bias. I mean, the founding fathers were Christian, and none of them were black.

One black man does not a truth make. And no mater how you slice it, white anglo-males are still in most all the seats of power in this great nation. And if history has taught me anything, those with power do not give it up without a fight.

I don't ever remember saying that I felt wronged in any way. I do feel that Affirmative Action is wrong. To give a job to a person based solely upon their race or sex is absolutely wrong. I, for one, would be happy to know that I received a job because of my qualifications, not because of my race or sex.

Does our society have a built in "Christian bias" as you proclaim? Probably so and the reason is probably because many of our founding fathers were Christian and NEVER claimed there should be a separation of church and state in any of our founding doctrines. Do I think a "Christian bias" is a good thing? You bet your patooty I do! This country's laws are based on Judeo-Christian beliefs, no wonder it is the greatest nation in the world!

Now, concerning the fact that there are more anglos in power in the United States than blacks, do you think it might have anything to do with our population and that, for the moment, there are more whites in our country than blacks? After all, we are a democracy. If the people want to put someone of another color into office, all they have to do is vote that person in. It really is that simple.

As for your bigoted views that whites are on some mountain and blacks and other people of color have been put there, presumably by "the man", I don't buy it. Affirmative Action has given people of color easier access to jobs and cheaper education since the mid 1960's than the white man. That is a fact. Fortunately, some blacks have taken advantage of these opportunities and unfortunately, some have not.

As for Mr. Sowell, just because he is black does not make him an intellectual or an authority. His education, experience and what he proclaims does make him an intellectual and an authority. Ask almost anyone in Washington and from what I hear, most have much respect for him even if they differ in opinion. I believe he makes some very good, common sense arguments that are hard to disagree with.

You may think my views change because I tend to be more of an independent than a conservative. I'll admit that I am an ultra-conservative in some respects but in others, such as labor issues I am probably ultra-liberal. I do appreciate your views and your opinions though. Tolerance of opinion is what makes our country great.

Bigoted views? I'm sorry that you feel this debate needs to be seasoned with insults.

I hardly think that recognizing certain characteristics of our society = bigotism. I used to think just like you, that showing preference to any race/gender/belief in any setting is wrong. But I have to disagree with you that African Americans have had more opportunities than WASPs (I apologize if you find that term offensive, I use it simply as short-hand.) But by ignoring race/gender/beliefs, it continues to advantage white/men/Christians. White, Christian, men have dominated this great nation from the very beginning. Do I feel the need to apologize for this? Not at all, but my Christian nature realizes that “whatever you do for the least of these you do for me.” My faith teaches me to be concerned for others, and to refrain from placing blame.

Consider yourself lucky to have been raised in a way that has allowed you to be successful. But do not blame others who have not been so fortunate. Personal responsibility is important, but has to be qualified by the circumstances of your life.

More than anything, I wish we lived in a world were personal biases didn't affect one’s actions. But I believe it is naive to think that racism is dead.

Please allow me to apologize. It was not my intention to be offensive when I mentioned, "your bigoted views". If your opinions were 180 degrees in the opposite direction, the black majority would call you a bigot. I do appreciate your comments even though I don't agree.
